Welcome back from the dead...
Me: Oh, ya know. I was just hibernating for awhile. LJ: Well, I feel neglected. Me: I'm sorry, LJ. Forigve me? LJ: Then post. Me: OK. Much has happened. Much has not happened. It's been the best of times. It's been the worst of times. I guess my life is somewhat like a strange Dickensian novel, though without the bustles and bonnets, guillotines and gutters. I haven't melted any ice lately, thank goodness, but I have returned to the problem of creating an architectural bubble. Who knows where that will lead. (No, no...I am not proposing architecture made of gum.) In other news, I got to play a pregnant woman last night in a performance art piece in Times Square. It was fun. People stopped mostly to figure out which ones of us were pregnant and which ones weren't. I, apparently, played pregnant pretty convincingly. Other than that, I've been making one of these: http://www.wikio.com/video/1488044And other than that...well, since the last time I posted, I survived second year! That was a feat of endurance. And patience. And strangely filled with 3 seasons worth of drama a la Dawson's Creek. Odd, really. In more exciting news, I've been to Japan and Madrid, both on school trips. Hopefully the first is leading towards a travel book deal and the second was a wicked fun design-build workshop in which I got to teach the Spanish students how to use power tools. Yes, I now know how to say basic power tool vocabulary en espanol. I leave you with this wise quote from Auntie Mame: Life is a banquet, and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death!" The end. It's a Good Thing
When in dark times...such as 2AM on a weekend with no end to work in sight and the computer not doing what you are asking it to do and some idiot playing awful rap music thinking everyone is better off hearing his life playlist (no, sir...definitely no)...one thinks of Martha Stewart and her favorite phrase..."it's a good thing." Thus...the good things in life: -sunflowers -puppies -rainbows -waterfalls -pints of ben and jerry's ice cream -chickens -the printing press -fireworks -Tschikovsky's 1812 -BBQs -orchestral music -claymation -puppets -picnics -Shakespeare -ABBA music videos -sparkles -tourmaline -fresh watermelon -the fact that Priscilla Queen of the Desert is now a musical in London -the fact that Spike Jonze is making Where the Wild Things Are into a movie -the possible fact that Tim Burton is making an Alice in Wonderland -tea parties -scones and clotted cream -the ice cream truck -ridiculous hats -some polka dot patterns -ducklings -large bronze sculptures of random people -Thomas Jefferson (not sure why, but he's pretty great) -mylar tape -hot glue -bare feet in green grass -rainstorms -low full moons -shooting stars -good times with friends -good times with family -family dinners -chocolate trifle -Jell-O -Cello -canoeing -getting a Hole in One (Mini Golf courses also count) -weeping willows and... -Bea Arthur. There are plenty more. Just that's what I came up with in 60 seconds. Try it. 60 seconds...list all good things. :) Current Mood: quixoticCurrent Music: Wake Up-Arcade Fire | | Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 | | 2:09 am |

Good morning, livejournal.
Well hello, world! I realize that I haven't written in this hallowed space for, well, months now. Not that I will probably be inspired by that fact to write here on a daily basis, but I feel like perhaps I could devote a few minutes in the wee hours of this morning to forget about the fact that this one file hasn't worked the way I want it to for the last 36 hours and that, in the end, I will just have to remake it. Wow...last time I wrote, I was hours away from finishing first year studio. Seems like ages ago, seeing as how those last 12 hours were pretty epic, the entire studio had a collective breakdown, ended up presenting projects that were pretty kickass, and then slept for about 24 hours each. Oh, and the Dean kind of nailed me to a wall over the project...but in a good way. Wow, but that was years ago. Bullet points from the last 10 months. -slept and not slept (you know life is awesome when this is bullet point #1) -went to California to watch hippies and my awesome friend drive homemade kinetic sculptures on a race course that included sand dunes, water, and about 26 miles of road (the race's mascot is a Kinetic Chicken...for the glory!) -had the most amazing bagels and hot chocolate in said northern California location -built an outdoor installation in the courtyard of PS1 in Queens, pretty proud of it (not my installation...but was on Team Build) -had to drive a forklift for said job for a day. probably the only time I've ever driven in the past 10 months...glad my car insurance probably didn't cover me anyway -worked for a pretty famous world reknowned architect who is one of the coolest teachers and people ever, especially for believing in me -designed a competition entry for said architect and saw months later that he basically sent in what I had sketched in the end...sweet... -saw more of NYC and realized that it ain't such a bad place. not going to say that it's Paradise or anything, but it has its perks -saw theater. decided I need to get involved again. am doing so currently. -saw Wall-E (yeah, it gets it own bullet point) -became a Fairy Jew Mother to the most adorable dog in the entire world -began second year and adopted the Superhero title of Masochist, can that be my superpower? -didn't melt any ice this year. yes. -got a new roommate who is fabulous -discovered Fresh Direct -survived first semester second year...trust me when I say this was a feat of superhuman strength and endurance -was complimented on my movie making and Photoshoping skillz -witnessed the marriage of two of my good friends -learned out to use a 3 axis milling machine -bent corrian (don't ask, but pretty sweet.) -amicably brought together the realms of Ham and the kingdoms of Cheese for a glorious holiday event -bought and decorated my first Christmas tree -decided to maintain my Masochistic superhero powers going into semester two, year two -learned many new computer programs that I can't possibly explain the usefulness of to anyone outside of studio -realized that I still want to be a teacher, and probably will be in the end -maintained a schedule for which my doorman tells me if I am early or late according to the hour of 4:30AM Welp...yeah. That's not a complete list by any means. But my computer is allowing me to open said file again, so I'm going back to work. Adios, mis amigos! And how the mind wanders...
Ever wandering...but to where? This I must figure out one day...but right now, I need to focus. Finding it difficult... So close. So excited. So much to do... | | Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 | | 6:14 am |
A Realization and a few shout outs...
Realization #4,987 about myself (but who's counting): Music makes me fall asleep. So do voices most of the time. If there is just silence, I am most awake. I wonder why that is. Maybe my mind wanders more in silence... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM! And MAZEL TOV MB and Chris. Such awesomeness. And now back to my regularly scheduled all-nighter. | | Sunday, April 6th, 2008 | | 12:55 am |
Spring Awakening
Um...go see it. It's amazing. The music is great. The actors are fabulous. And the set (because I have to comment) is kickass. Bare bulbs are just so cool. So are platforms hanging from the ceiling. And the chair about 15' off the ground. And the band. They're also badass. That wasn't a deep review. Sorry, back to studio...but I'm just letting everyone that Spring Awakening is great. Also, I have blue mascara on. (No, I don't own it.) Current Music: Touch Me from Spring Awakening | | Friday, March 14th, 2008 | | 12:32 pm |
Worst out of context headline from CNN that popped up on my gmail screen: CNN Just published-McDowell shoots 64 to lead in Korea What?! That's horrible! What a massacre? And why is an Irish guy trying to take over Korea? What's going on? Oh yeah, McDowell is a golfer. | | 1:32 am |
Happy Pi Day!!!
Today would be the day when all math nerds eat pie. Frankly, though not a math nerd, I support this action. So go eat pie and happy pi day! Also, random story from the 1 Train #457: Conductor says, "In order to get off at 79th, say the magic password." I'll let you think of your top 10 favorite passwords to scream out. No one did it, but I thought of a few. | | Thursday, February 28th, 2008 | | 10:57 pm |

Starbucks The Way I See It #282
"Childhood is a strange country. It's a place you come from or go to -- at least in your mind. For me it has an endless, spellbound something in it that feels remote. It's like a ltitle sealed-vault country of cake breath and grass stains where what you do instead of work is spin until you're dizzy." ~Lyall Bush, Executive Director of Richard Hugo House Current Mood: workingCurrent Music: OK Go | | Friday, February 15th, 2008 | | 2:01 am |
Oh the early 90s
My studio mate from Korea just turned to me and said, "Listen to this! You should get to know this music! It's good!" As I take the offered headphones, I hear a very familiar beat. "Do you know this music, Melissa?" Oh,Janet. How could I not know you? "Together Again." Very apt for the moment. I then introduced her to Paula Abdul. She's now rocking out. this just came on and made me happy
Les poissons, les poissons How I love les poissons Love to chop and to serve little fish First I cut off their heads Then I pull out their bones Ah, mais oui, ca c'est toujours delish Les poissons, les poissons Hee-hee-hee, haw-haw-haw With the cleaver I hack them in two I pull out what's inside And I serve it up fried God, I love little fishes, don't you? Here's something for tempting the palate Prepared in the classic technique First you pound the fish flat With a mallet Then you slash through the skin Give the belly a slice Then you rub some salt in 'Cause that makes it taste nice [Zut alors, I have missed one!] Sacre bleu! What is this? How on earth could I miss Such a sweet little suculent crab Quel domage. What a loss Here we go in the sauce Now some flour, I think just a dab Now I stuff you with bread It don't hurt 'cause you're dead And you're certainly lucky you are 'Cause it's gonna be hot In my big silver pot Tootle-loo, mon poison, au revoir! The Perplex Hex
Why is it that I am always drawn to the hexagon? It is such an elusive, abusive form to deal with...and no one ever really succeeds, except for nature herself. Man made hexes are just always a bad idea. (Sorry, Bucky.) And why is it that it is 5:43AM and I'm still working...and still planning on working until class at 9? Oh yes, I remember, because I LOVE IT! Current Mood: artistic | | Sunday, September 30th, 2007 | | 5:53 pm |
The Track of Tropical Storm Melissa
In my 23 years of life, I have never been on the hurricane list. However, luckily for me, in 1991, Michelle hit hard and was honorably retired from the hurricane name database. Somehow, my name was pulled out of the hat, and I am officially on the 2007/2013 list. On Sept. 28th, Tropical Depression Melissa formed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This, unbeknownst to me, coincided with my Friday pin-up of my latest architectural project, a climatologist's "cell," in which a climatologist was tracking hurricane patterns. As Friday went on, I gained momentum leading up to the pin-up while the emotional projection of myself went from 15mph winds to 40, moving up to the tropical storm category. I lingered for awhile as a tropical storm, hovering in limbo, a little unclear of my critics remarks. Around the time I received an email from him on Saturday morning, bursting my bubbles of confidence, Tropical Storm Melissa took a turn for the worse...slowly losing power on the radar. As I look at my lack of ideas for tomorrow's crit, I check weather.com only to find that the headline reads: "Melissa Fizzles. Melissa is rapidly becoming a remnant..." Really encouraging...
